SESSION NARRATIVE:

Organizing "I.T." is a session about organizing newsletters for the Information Technology generation. This session will discuss recruiting and training a staff, developing a style guide, choosing topics and types of articles, and planning for individual issues and the year.

The session will begin with an ice breaker to have the participants better understand the importance of organizing a newsletter.

The first part of Organizing "I.T." will deal with recruiting and training a staff, developing a style guide, and choosing topics and types of articles. Recruiting a quality staff is very important to the success of a newsletter. Equally as important is training the members of the newsletter staff. Ideas will be shared regarding recruitment and training of staff. The importance of developing a style guide to be used during the production of a newsletter will be stressed. This discussion will focus on the topics of punctuation, capitalization, and consistency. The discussion will shift to choosing topics and types of articles.

The second part of this session will cover specific ways to organize a newsletter. The discussion will begin with developing deadlines for the year. The focus will then move towards developing timelines for each issue. Finally, assigning various responsibilities will be covered. Writing articles, picture/graphics collection, editing functions, and layout will need to be assigned to members of the newsletter staff.

The session will conclude with an emphasis on evaluation. There will also be an emphasis on the need to keep the entire newsletter process organized.
