Order of the Arrow • Boy Scouts of America
OA HELPING TROOPS
GOAL
To learn about ways the OA can make a mark on a new scout's scouting journey.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE SESSION
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
For this session, you will need the following:
PHYSICAL ARRANGEMENTS
A classroom is a great facility.
OTHER ADVANCE PREPARATIONS
Cover one wall in butcher paper, title it "Billy Arrowmen's Adventure." Make a trail with the markers, from your first specific session objective to your last. Cover each of those sections with paper until you get to that point in your session. (Billy goes along the trail, as you teach the "stops" (your main session objectives).
Cover a wall in tin foil, for fun. Add streamers, balloons, etc. Use your imagination, have fun, set an up tempo atmosphere.
Dress Billy Arrowman in the uniform mentioned above.
Set up a camping promotion site outside, prepare your assistant to do the "ultimate presentation." Include flyers (on bright paper), modern music, a minicamp, and a lot of energy!
SESSION NARRATIVE
Concept of Billy’s Adventure (for the trainer)
We have created a fun and interesting way to explain some of the ways the OA can help troops. Your session will be taught through the eyes and life of Billy Arrowman. As he grows up in scouting, he will experience some of the programs that assist troops and then eventually as he gets older, deliver some of those programs. You may pick a wall to cover in butcher paper and title Billy Arrowman’s Life As you teach each topic, move Billy (a mannequin with uniform) along the path. (i.e., a younger Billy would experience a OA assisted WeBelos crossover into scouting, then a Call out, then an older Billy would do camping promotions to his troop with OA learned skills.) Hype up this role play, get your audience involved! You may also put fun items on the lifeline such as getting a driver’s license, getting a first job, etc.
Introduction and Icebreaker (3 minutes)
Introduce topic and trainer, you MUST be exciting! Icebreaker to determine who traveled the smallest distance to attend. Candy for the winner(s).
Billy Arrowman (5 minute)
Introduce Billy Arrowman (assistant brings in the mannequin). Explain the concept of Billy's Adventure, and the stops are the points of the session. Move him along the path on the wall as you get to the next topic.
Camping Promotion (20 minutes)
Billy has been asked to help out visiting other troops to do camping promotion. Discuss things that make up great camping promotions (video clips, exciting modern music, bright flyers, minicamp set up, exciting presenters, etc.). Then surprise the group by announcing that the group is going outside to see the "ultimate presentation for camping!" Travel outside the building where your assistant will put on a 3 minute presentation (mention it is shorter at this training for time's sake). Reproduce flyer following this page on neon paper.
Where To Go Camping Book (7 minutes)
Billy's Dad is great with computers and web site, he has offered to design a "Where To Go Camping Web Site" for all troops! Discuss and look at different books and mediums to list and share great camping information with troops. How does this help the image of the OA?
Billy is helping the lodge and his troop at the same time!
Troop Chief Program (10 minutes)
Billy has volunteered to be a "troop rep." This is a program where each troop has a contact person, or troop rep that reminds the other OA members in the troop about meetings and events. Lodge's can create a Troop Rep Committee if they like. This keeps more youth active (now that they have these duties) and also helps the communication in the lodge.
