Brotherhood Conversion

Objective

To focus on how Brotherhood Conversion can enhance the individual and the lodge.

Opening

Introduce yourself, lodge, city and state. State the objectives of the session.

Discovery

There is one singular honor an Arrowman can attain by active pursuit: Brotherhood membership.

In this session, let's focus on why people should attain Brotherhood, how it helps them as members and how it can help the lodge.

Teaching/Learning

What are the basic requirements for the Brotherhood?
- 10 months of active membership as an Ordeal member
- A sincere desire to "seal" your membership
- The willingness to accept greater responsibility in the lodge
- Complete the tests and the induction

How does it help the individual Arrowman?
- Helps him to understand the significance of the mission and purpose of the lodge.
- Demonstrates to others the desire to accept the Obligation as a path to follow in life.
- Aids in crystallizing the Scout Oath and Law into a daily habit of Cheerful Service.

How can it help the lodge?
- Gives the lodge depth in members who understand the Order's purpose.
- Helps the lodge to retain members.
- Aids in the 30% conversion needed to be a National Quality Lodge.

Application

How can you assist an Ordeal member to attain the Brotherhood?
- "Adopt" an Ordeal member, offer to assist them in their preparation.
- Promote the Brotherhood Honor in your troop.
- Share with others how Brotherhood attainment has helped you.
- Provide opportunities, transportation, etc. for attendance at Brotherhood inductions.
- Have an active Brotherhood Committee that does promotion all year long for conversion among eligible Ordeal members.
- Explain to an Ordeal member the potential personal benefits of Brotherhood membership.
- Serve as a "Nimat" on the Brotherhood hike.
- Anything else to add?

Summary

For many of us, attaining the Brotherhood is a mountaintop experience. It demonstrates to the lodge your commitment to service and to the principles of Scouting.

Brotherhood membership often acts as the springboard for greater responsibilities and a higher profile as an Arrowman and a Scouter.

It shows all you encounter that you accept the obligation as a plan or roadmap for future service.
